LIFE SAFETY APPLICATION FOR “SCIFS” AND OTHER SECURE AREAS
Although NFPA 101 Life Safety Codes apply directly to the Means of Egress, the regulations and Interpretations of NFPA 101 also apply directly to the first part of the Means of Egress, “The Exit Access” (See Tutorial Means of Egress).
The number of doors in a SCIF may vary from one to as many as three or four. There is only one primary entrance door to a SCIF but depending on life safety regulations or the special needs of the customer there maybe one or more exit doors.
In any case, all doors in a SCIF must comply with the life safety requirements for single motion egress. In addition they must comply with sound masking requirements and DOD requirements for deadbolts in place of deadlatches wherever there is open storage of classified information.
Consider the Lockmasters LKM 7002 “Exit Only Deadlock” as a good choice for SCIF exit doors that are covered by DOD rules for open storage of classified documents (FF-L-2740A and FF-L-2890) for more information on DOD regulations for SCIF doors refer to Tutorial DOD Regulations.
